A new beginning. That is what every arriving year powerfully symbolizes. And even though 2009 will find distressed nations, worried citizens and a cloudy horizon, the hope for a fresh start is everywhere. We are just coming out of 12 months in which we saw the economy crumble, two wars with no end in sight, an even deeper erosion of the peace and the unconscionable dehumanization and persecution of hundreds of thousands, nations mired in deep economic and moral crisis.

Not surprisingly, seldom has a New Year been so anxiously awaited. In the hope that we can make things better in 2009, I pray for greater peace and stability. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I wish you Health…
So you may enjoy each day in comfort.

I wish you the Love of friends and family…
And Peace within your heart.

I wish you the Beauty of nature…
That you may enjoy the work of God.

I wish you Wisdom to choose priorities…
For those things that really matter in life.

I wish you Generousity so you may share…
All good things that come to you.

I wish you Happiness and Joy…
And Blessings for the New Year.

I wish you the best of everything…
That you so well deserve.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS!

Dhikr (Remembrance) of Allah

Dhikr (Remembrance) of Allah

Dhikr,  i.e. mental or verbal remembrance of Allah is so consoling, pleasant and every form of worship that one can perform it continuously at all times and with great benefit. Allah has enjoined his Dhikr in the Quran in the following words:

یَا اَیُّھَاالّذِیۡنَ آمَنُوۡااذۡکُرُوااللّٰہ ذِکۡرًاکَثِیۡرًا

dhikr

Obviously Dhikr does not benefit Allah, who has no need of it; the benefit is for Allah’s bondsmen since Dhikr strengthens the bond between Allah and His bondsmen. It is food for the soul which invigorates it. And with an invigorated soul it becomes easy to overcome one’s base instincts and to vanquish the Devil. Thus one is able more easily to avoid sins and the good deeds increase.

Someone asked our eternally blessed prophet “Which worship is highest in  the Eyes of Allah and which shall be reckoned weightiest on the Day of Judgment?” The prophet replied “Dhikr of Allah” (Jami’alusul, p.475 vol.4).

A companion once submitted to the eternally blessed Prophet; “O Messenger of Allah! Good deeds are many and I do not have the strength to perform all of them. So please tell me one thing that I may always remember. Please do not tell me many things as I would forget them.” The Holy Prophet said; “Your tongue should be wet with the Dhikr of Allah”. (Jami Tirmizi, Dawat Bab Fadl al Dhikr).

Abu Musa Ashari has been quoted as follows:

“The eternally blessed Prophet said “A house wherein Allah is remembered and a house wherein he is not remembered are like living and dead bodies.” (Bukhari and Muslim).

Another hadith quotes our prophet as follows:

“People who leave a meeting or conclave without mentioning and remembering Allah are like those who get off from a dead ass, and such a meeting they would repent (for time misspent) on the day of Judgment.” (Abu Daud).

That’s why a hadith tells us to recite the following words at the end of every meeting or conclave.

This atones for the shortcomings of the meeting.

In spite o the great merits of Dhikr. Allah has made it very easy. There are no preconditions attached to it. If someone performs ablution and then sits facing qiblah and performs Dhikr it is all for the best. But if there is no time or occasion for it then one can perform Dhikr while engaged other works, even ablution is not required and Dhikr is permitted even when unclean after coition or while menstruating. However one should not perform it verbally when unclothed or when in some unclean place like lavatory. However even there dhikr can be done without intoning or moving the tongue. Thus the merits of this worship can be repeated at all times without any difficulty. However it is appropriate to fix a particular time in the night or the day when one can perform Dhikr after ablution and facing the qiblah; Dhikr at other times would be an added boon..

Hadith quotes our eternally blessed prophet a saying that “The following four phrases are most pleasing to Allah”. (Sahih Muslim) :

 سُبۡحَانَ اللّٰہِ وَالۡحمۡدُللّٰہِ وَلآ اِلٰہَ اِلَّااللّٰہُ وَاللّٰہُ اَکۡبَرُ

Hadith tells us that two phrases most pleasing to Al-Rahman are light on the tongue but view weighty on the Day of Judgment (Bukhari Muslim) :

سُبۡحَانَ اللّٰہِ وَبِحَمۡدِہٖ سُبۡحَانَ اللّٰہِ الۡعَظِیۡم

Hadith tells us to recite   لَاحَوۡلَ وَلَاقُوَّۃََ َالَّابِاللّٰہ     much because these words are among the treasures of paradise (Mishkat) :

لَا ءِالٰہَ اِلَّا اللَّہُ وَحۡدَہٗ لَاشَرِیۡکَ لَہٗ،لَہٗ

الۡمُلۡکُ وَلَہُ الۡحَمۡدُوَھُوَعَلٰے کُلِّ شیۡیءٍقَدِیۡرٌ،

Hadith tells us that if one recites these words in the morning he gets merit equivalent to freeing of ten slaves from among the progeny of Prophet of Islam, he gets ten good deeds recorded in his name, his ten sins are pardoned he is elevated  by ten stages and he is protected against the Devil till evening. And if he recites these words in the evening; he gets the same reward till morning (Abu Daud).

حَسۡبِیَ اللّہُ لَآاِلٰہَ اِلَّہ ھُوَعَلَیۡہِ تَوَکَّلۡتُ وَھُوَ رَبُّ الۡعَرۡشِ الۡعَظِیۡم،

Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?

Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?

I know one, who claimed as an atheist who sounds to hate God badly. He asked God to give miracles for him to believe God’s existence. He said ‘God give nothing’ and he then deciced that there is no God.

Our life is miracle. Look at people around us, see how they are beautiful, our eyes can see this world clearly, isn’t it wonderfull? The trees, the flowers, the sun, the moon, the stars… the love we have.

From micro-orgasms to the human. From whales to ants and everything in between. The atmosphere we breath, the lakes we swim in, the forests in their splendor, the desert in its empty grandeur and the ends of the earth in their white array.

We often ignore it because we are so used to it. Our life is a great gift from God. And there are so many more wonderfull things we should be thankful to God.

Surah Al-Rahman, this entire chapter in Quran speaks of Allah’s Affection and beneficence.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

(1) (Allah) Most Gracious!
(2) It is He Who has taught the Qur’an.
(3) He has created man:
(4) He has taught him speech (and Intelligence)
(5) The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed;
(6) And the herbs and the trees-both (alike) bow in adoration.
(7) And the Firmament has He raised high, and He has set up the balance (of Justice),
(8) In order that ye may not transgress (due) balance.
(9) So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance.
(10) It is He Who has spread out the earth for (His) creatures:
(11) Therein is fruit and date-palms, producing spathes (enclosing dates):
(12) Also corn with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder and sweet-smelling plants.
(13) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
(14) He created man from sounding clay like unto pottery,
(15) And He created Jinns from fire free of smoke:
(16) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
(17) (He is) Lord of the two Easts and Lord of the two Wests:
(18) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
(19) He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together:
(20) Between them is a Barrier which they do not transgress:
(21) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
(22) Out of them come Pearls and Coral:
(23) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
(24) And His are the Ships sailing smoothly through the seas lofty as mountains:
(25) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
(26) All that is on earth will perish;
(27) But will abide (forever) the Face of thy Lord― full of Majesty, Bounty and Honour.
(28) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
(29) Of Him seeks (its needs) every creature in the heavens and on earth: every day in (new) Splendour doth He (shine)!
(30) Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

Virtues of Zam Zam water

Is the Water of Zam-Zam Drinkable?

Water Research by Tariq Hussain, Desalting Engineer

The well of Zamzam is the well that Allah caused to flow at Makkah for Prophet Ibrahim’s wife Hajar and for his oldest son Ismail, (peace be upon them all).

In 1971, an Egyptian doctor wrote to the European Press, a letter saying that Zamzam water was not fit for drinking purposes. He immediately thought that this was just a form of prejudice against the Muslims and that since his Statement was based on the assumption that since the Kaaba was a shallow place (below sea level) and located in the centre of the city of Makkah, the waste water of the city collecting through the drains fell into well holding the water.

Fortunately, the news came to King Faisal’s ears who got extremely angry and decided to disprove the Egyptian doctor’s provocative statement. He immediately ordered the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources to investigate and send samples of Zamzam water to European laboratories for testing the potability of the water. The ministry then instructed the Jeddah Power and Desalination Plants to carry out this task. It was here  that I was employed as a desalting engineer (chemical engineer to produce drinking water from sea water) I was chosen to carry out this assignment. At this stage, I remember that I had no idea what the well holding the water looked like. I went to Makkah and reported to the authorities at the Kaaba explaining my purpose of visit. They deputed a man to give me whatever help was required.

When we reached the well, it was hard for me to believe that a pool of water more like a small pond, about 18 by 14 feet, was the well that supplied millions of gallons of water every year to hajis ever since it came into existence at the time of Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.), many, many centuries ago.

I started my investigations and took the dimensions of the well. I asked the man to show me the depth of the well. First he took a shower and descended into the water. Then he straightened his body. I saw that the water level came up to just above his shoulders. His height was around five feet, eight inches. He then started moving from one corner to the other in the well (standing all the while since he was not allowed to dip his head into the water) in search of any inlet or pipeline inside the well to see from where the water came in. However, the man reported that he could not find any inlet or pipeline inside the well. I thought of another idea. The water could be withdrawn rapidly with the  help of a big transfer pump which was installed at the well for the Zamzam water storage tanks. In this way, the water level would drop enabling us to locate the point of entry of the water.

Surprisingly, nothing was observed during the pumping period, but I knew that this was the only method by which you could find the entrance of the water to the well. So I decided to repeat the process. But this time I instructed the man to stand still at one place and carefully observe any unusual thing happening inside the well. After a while, he suddenly raised his hands and shouted, Alhamdullillah! I have found it! The sand is dancing beneath my feet as the water oozes out of the bed of the well.” Then he moved around the well during the pumping period and noticed the same phenomenon everywhere in the well. Actually the flow of water into the well through the bed was equal at every point, thus keeping the level of the water steady.

After I finished my observations I took the samples of the water for European laboratories to test. Before I left the Kaaba, I asked the authorities about the other wells around Makkah. I was told that these wells were mostly dry. When I reached my office in Jeddah I reported my findings to my boss who listened with great interest but made a very irrational comment that the Zamzam well could be internally connected to the Red Sea. How was it possible when Makkah is about 75 kilometres away from the sea and the wells located before the city usually remains dry? The results of the water samples tested by the European laboratories and the one we analysed in our own laboratory were found to be almost identical.

The difference between Zamzam water and other water (city water) was in the quantity of calcium and magnesium salts. The content of these was slightly higher in Zamzam water. This may be why this water refreshes tired hajis, but more significantly, the water contains fluorides that have an effective germicidal action. Moreover, the remarks of the European laboratories showed that the water was fit for drinking.

Hence the statement made by the Egyptian doctor was proved false. When this was reported to King Faisal he was extremely pleased and ordered the contradiction of the report in the European Press. In a way, it was a blessing that this study was undertaken to show the chemical composition of the water. In fact, the more you explore, the more wonders surface and you find yourself believing implicitly in the miracles of this water that Allah bestowed as a gift on the faithful coming from far and wide to the desert land for pilgrimage. Let me sum up some of the features of Zamzam water.

  • This well has never dried up. On the contrary it has always fulfilled the demand for water.
  • It has always maintained the same salt composition and taste ever since it came into existence.
  • Its potability (drinkability) has always been universally recognised as pilgrims from all over the world visit Kaaba every year for Hajj and Umrah, but have never complained about it. Instead,  they have always enjoyed the water that refreshes them.
  • Water tastes different at different places. Zamzam water’s appeal has always been universal.
  • This water has never been chemically treated or chlorinated as is the case with water pumped into the cities.
  • Biological growth and vegetation usually takes place in most wells. This makes the water unpalatable owing to the growth of algae causing taste and odour problems. But in the case of the Zamzam water well, there wasn’t any sign of biological growth.
  • Centuries ago, Bibi Hajra (A.S.) searched desperately for water in the hills of Safa and Marwa to give to her newly born son Hazrat Ismail (A.S.) As she ran from one place to another in search of water, her child rubbed his feet against the sand. A pool of water surfaced, and by the grace of Allah, shaped itself into a well which came to be called Zamzam water.

A Mini Documentary on Zam Zam

Adhan : An Amazing Discovery

Adhan : An Amazing Discovery

An incredible medium for the proclamation of Tawheed of the Almighty Allah and risalat of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wassallam, the sound of which constantly echoes around the globe.  Amazing though it sounds, it is an established fact.

Have a look at a map of Indonesia (an Islamic country) right on the eastern side of the earth’s central land mass. Indonesia consists of numerous small islands, the principle ones amongst them being Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Celebes, all of which are well known. It is the largest Islamic country in the world, with 180 millions inhabitants. The number of non-Muslims here is negligible. As soon as dawn breaks on the eastern island of celebes, at approximately 5:30 am local time, Fajr Adhan begins. Thousands of Mu’azzins in eastern Indonesia commence proclaiming the Tawheed (oneness) of the Almighty, Omnipotent and Omniscient Allah and Risalat (universal Apostleship) of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wassallam.

The process then continues and advances towards the western islands of Indonesia. The time difference between the eastern and western Islands of indonesia is one and a half hours. Hence, one and half hours after the Adhan has been completed in celebes, it echoes in Jakarta on Java island. Sumatra then follows suit and before this auspicious process of calling Adhan ends in indonesia, it has already begun in Malaysia. Burma is then next in line, and within an hour of its commencement in Jakarta, it reaches Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. No sooner the calling of Adhan ends in Bangladesh, it has already prevailed in western India, from Calcutta to Srinagar. It then advances towards Bombay and the environment of entire India resounds with this august proclamation. Srinagar and Sialkot (a city in north Pakistan) have the same timing for Adhan. The time difference between Sialkot, Kota, Karachi and Gowandar (a city in Baluchistan, a province of Pakistan) is forty minutes, and within this time, Fajr Adhan is heard throughout Pakistan. Before it end there, however, it has already begun in Afghanistan and Muscat.

The time difference between Muscat and Baghdad is one hour. Adhan resounds during this one hour in the environments of Hijaz-e-Muqaddas, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq. The time difference between Baghdad and Alexandra in Egypt is again one hour. Adhan continues to resound in Syria, Egypt, Somalia and Sudan during this hour. Alexandra and Istanbul (the principle city of Turkey)are situated on the same geographical longitude. The time difference between eastern and western Turkey is one and a half hours, and during this time it is echoed with the call to prayer. Alexandria and Tripoli (the capital city of Libya) are located at an hour’s difference from one another. The process of calling Adhan thus continues throughout the whole of Africa.

Therefore, the procalimation of the Oneness of Allah and the Apostleship of Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wasallam that had begun in the eastern island of Indonesia reaches the eastern shore of the Atlantic Ocean after nine and a half hour Prior to the Adhan reaching the shores of the Atlantic, the process of Zuhr Adhan has already commenced in eastern Indonesia, and before it reaches Dhaka, Asr Adhan has started. This has hardly reached Jakarta one and a half hours later, then the time of Maghrib becomes due, and no sooner has Maghrib time reached Sumatra, then the time for calling ‘Isha Adhan, the Mu’azzins in Africa are calling out the Adhan for ‘Isha.

If we were to ponder over this phenomenon seriously and studiously, we would conclude the amazing fact that there is not a single moment when thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of Mu’azzins around the world are not proclaiming the Oneness of Almighty Allah and Apostleship of the noble Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam on the surface of this earth!! Insha’allah, this universal and continuous calling of the Adhan shall not seize until the Day of Judgement, and we should all continue to make du’a for the same. Ameen!

Why We Read The Quran Even If We Don’t Understand It

Why Do We Read the Quran Even though We Don’t Understand A Single Arabic Word?

An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could. One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I try to read the Quran just like you but I don’t understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Quran do?”

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.” The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.

The old man said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You’re just not trying hard enough,” and he went out the door to watch the boy try again. At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, “See Grandpa, it’s useless!”

“So you think it is useless?” The old man said, “Look at the basket.” The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out. “Son, that’s what happens when you read the Quran. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Allah in our lives.”

The Miracle Of Human Mind

The caliph once sent a Jewish scholar to debate with Imam ‘Ali ibn Musa Ar-Ridha (peace be upon him). The Jew said to him, “How can you accept Muhammad as the Messenger of God when he showed no miracles?”

The Imam replied, “The greatest miracle of God is the human mind. It allows ideas to be thought through and reasoned out. Man must accept God through reason, not through miracles.”

At first glance it might seem as though this story confirms that the Prophet showed no miracles, while history proves that he performed many remarkable actions that can only be accomplished through Allah’s power and will. We know of the moon splitting, rocks, trees, and other inanimate objects testifying to Allah’s Oneness and the Prophet’s Message, and angels coming to the aid of the Muslim army in a time of need; however, these events were not enacted to prove Muhammad’s prophethood to anyone. If they were, then not a single person would have disbelieved. Abu Jahl, the Prophet’s arch enemy, witnessed some of these miraculous occurrences with his own eyes, yet he died in disbelief. He had developed compound ignorance.

“That is because they hate what Allah has revealed; so He has made their deeds fruitless.” (Qur‘an 47:9)

The Jew in the above story was looking for some other worldly phenomena that would have proved Prophet Muhammad’s message and turned him into a believing Muslim. But the reality is that, even if Imam Ridha himself had made a tree speak to the man and profess the declarations of faith (shahadatain), that man still would not have believed. If he could not arrive at belief through the miracle of his own intellect, after obviously having studied Islam thoroughly enough to debate with a Muslim, nothing could turn his heart.

“Allah hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they (incur).” (Qur‘an 2:7).

Rights of Women in Islam : Modernising or Outdated?

The Women’s Rights in Islam : Modernising or Outdated?

Lecture/Talk by Dr. Zakir Naik

‘As-salaamu Alaikum Warahamatullahi Wabarakatuhu’ – ‘May peace blessing and mercy of Almighty Allah, be on all of you’.

The topic of today’s day is – ‘The Women’s Rights in Islam – Modernising or Outdated?’

According to the Oxford dictionary, ‘Women’s Rights are the rights, that promote a position of social and legal equality, of women to men’. According to the Oxford dictionary, ‘they are the rights, claimed for the women, equal to those of men, as regards to suffrage that right to vote, as regards to property, etc’. ‘Modernising’, according to the Oxford dictionary means, ‘to make modern, to adapt to modern needs or habits’. And according to the Webster’s dictionary it means ‘To make modern, or to give a new character or appearance – e.g., to modernise ones ideas’.

In short, modernising is a process of updating or opting for the betterment of the present status itself – It is not the present modern status itself.

Can we modernise ourselves, to master our problems, and to realize a new way of life, for the whole human race? I am not concerned about the modern ideas, the conclusions and the categorical statements made by scientists and inexperienced armchair experts, as how a life should be lived by a woman. I am going to base my conclusions and considerations on truth, which can be proved by experience. Experience and unbiased factual holistic analysis, are the sure test, between the gold of truth, and the glitter of theory.

We have to check our thinking against reality, otherwise many a times, our mental process will go astray – Indeed the great brains of one time, believed that the world was flat. If we agree with the ‘Women’s rights in Islam’, as portrayed by the Western media, you have no option, but to agree that the ‘Women’s rights in Islam’ are outdated. The Western talk of women’s liberation, is actually a disguised form of exploitation of her body, deprivation of her honour and degradation of her soul. The Western society which speaks of upgrading the status of women in Islam, have actually reduced her status to concubines, to mistresses, to society butterflies, which are mere tools in the hands of sex marketers and pleasure seekers, which are disguised behind the colorful screen of art and culture.

Islam’s radical revolutionary support, gave women their due right and status in the days of ignorance… 1,400 years ago. Islam’s objective was and continues to be, to modernise our thinking, our living, our seeing, our hearing, our feeling and striving for the women’s upliftment and emancipation in the society. Before I dwell further with the topic, I would like you to make note of a few points. The first point is that, ‘approximately one fifth of the world’s population, consists of Muslims’. There are different Muslim societies – Some may be close to Islam, some may be far away from Islam. The ‘Women’s rights in Islam’ should judged according to the authentic sources, and not what individual Muslims do, or what the Muslim society does.

The authentic sources of Islam, are the Quran, which is the word of God, and the authentic Sunnah, and the traditions of our beloved Prophet Muhammed (may peace and blessings be upon him). Point number four – the Quran will never contradict itself, nor will the Sahih Hadith contradict itself… neither will these two authentic sources, contradict each other.

Point number five – ‘Sometimes the scholars differ, and many a times, these differences can be removed by analyzing the Quran as a whole, and not just by quoting one particular Verse’. Because if one particular verse of the Quran if its ambiguous many a times the answer is given somewhere else in the Quran – Some people quote one source and neglect all the other sources. And the last point is – ‘It is the duty of every Muslim, male or female, to seek the pleasure of Allah (SWT), and to act as His trustee on this world, and not to try and gain fame or satisfy one’s own ego.

Islam believes in equality of men and women – ‘Equality’ does not mean ‘Identicality’.

In Islam, the role of a man and woman… it is complimentary, it is not conflicting. It is that of a partnership – it is not contradictory, so as to strive for supremacy. Where ‘Women’s rights in Islam’ is concerned, I have divided into 6 broad categories. The first are ‘the Spiritual rights’, second are ‘the Economical rights’, third are ‘the Social rights’, fourth are ‘the Educational rights’, fifth are ‘the Legal rights’, and last are ‘the Political rights’.

Let us analyze ‘the Spiritual rights’ of women in Islam.

The greatest misconception that the West has about Islam, is that they think…‘Paradise in Islam, is only meant for the male – it is not meant for the female’. This misconception can be removed by quoting from Surah Nisa, Ch. No. 4, Verse No 124, which says:

‘If any of you do deeds of righteousness, whether it be male or a female and has faith, they shall surely enter Paradise and not the least injustice shall be done to them’. (Surah Nisa 4:124)

A similar thing is repeated in Surah Nahl, Ch.16, Verse No.97 which says: ‘If any of you perform good deeds, be it a man or a women and is a believer, We shall give you good life and We should reward you for all your good works’. (Surah Nahl 16:97)

Just because in Islam, sex is not the criteria to enter Paradise… will you call such rights in Islam as modernising or outdated?

Another misconception is that, which the Western media has, that… ‘The woman has no soul’. In fact, it was in the seventeenth century, when the Council of wise men… when they gathered at Rome, and they unanimously agreed that the woman had no soul. In Islam, man and woman have the same spiritual nature, and that is clarified by the Verse from Surah Nisa, Ch.4, Verse No.1.

‘O humankind reverence your guardian lord, who has created you from a single person and created like nature his mate’. (Surah Nisa 4:1)

A similar thing is mentioned in Surah Nahl, Ch.16, Verse No.72, which says: ‘We have made for you companions and mates of your own nature’. (Surah Nahl 16:72)

Again in Surah Al-Shura, Ch.42, Verse No.11, it says: ‘He is the one who has created the heavens and the earth and has made for you pairs from among yourselves’. (Surah Al-Shura 42:11)

Just because the spiritual nature of a man and woman is the same in Islam, will you call such rights in Islam, as modernizing or outdated?

The Quran clearly mentions that; ‘Allah (SWT) has breathed somewhat of His spirit into the human beings’. If you read Surah Hijr, Ch.15, Verse No.29, it says: ‘When I have fashioned you in due proportion and have breathed into you something of my spirit, fall ye down in  obeisance’. (Surah Hijr 15:29)

A similar thing is repeated in the Quran, in Surah Sajdah, Ch. 32, Verse No.9, which says: ‘We have fashioned you in due proportion and have breathed into you something of My spirit’. (Surah Sajdah 32:9)

Here, when Allah (SWT) refers to… ‘As something of My Spirit, is breathed into the human beings’, it does not mean, a sort of incarnation or a pantheistic form. It means that Allah has given to every human being something of His spiritual Nature, and the Knowledge of God Almighty, and coming closer towards Him. Here it refers to both Adam and Eve (may peace be upon them). Both were breathed something of Allah (SWT)’S Spirit. Again we read in the Quran, that Allah has appointed the human being as His vicegerent, as His trustee, as is mentioned in Surah Isra, Ch.17, Verse No.70, which says:

‘We have honoured the children of Adam and bestowed on them special favours’. (Surah Isra 17:70)

Here all the children of Adam have been honoured, male as well as female. There are some Religious scriptures, for example the Bible, which puts the blame on Eve for the downfall of humanity. In fact if you read the Quran in Surah Araf, Ch.7, Verse No.19 to 27, Adam and Eve (may peace be upon them both) are addressed, more than a dozen of times. Both disobeyed God, both asked for forgiveness, both repented, and both were forgiven.

In the Bible, if you read Genesis, Ch. 3, only Eve is held responsible (May peace be upon her) for the downfall of humanity. And according to the doctrine of ‘Original Sin’, because of Eve (may peace be upon her) the whole of humanity is born in sin. If you read the Bible in Genesis, Ch. 3, Verse No.16, it states that the God of ‘the Bible’ it is saying ‘Unto the woman you shall bear in conception and in sorrow shall you give birth and your desire shall be of your husband and he shall rule over you’. That means, pregnancy and child birth has been said in the Bible to degrade the women and the labour pain is a sort of punishment.

In fact if you read the Quran, pregnancy and child birth have uplifted the women. If you read Surah Nisa, Ch.4, Verse No.1, it says: ‘Respect the womb that bore you’. (Surah Nisa 4:1)

Its mentioned in Surah Luqman, Ch.31, Verse No.14, it says: ‘We have enjoined on the human being to be kind to the parents, in travail upon travail did their mother bore them and in years twain was their weaning’. (Surah Luqman 31:14)

A similar thing is mentioned in Surah Ahqaf, Ch.46, Verse No.15. It again repeats, which says: ‘We have enjoined on the human beings to be kind to his parents’. (Surah Ahqaf 46:15)

To be kind to the parents – ‘in pain did their mother bore them, and in pain did she give them birth’ – Pregnancy in the Quran has uplifted the women not degraded her. Just because pregnancy has uplifted the women in Islam will you call such rights in Islam as modernizing or outdated?

The only criteria for judgment in the sight of Allah is ‘Taqwa’, ‘God consciousness’ or ‘righteousness’.

It is  mentioned in Surah Hujurat, Ch.49, Verse No.13: ‘O humankind,  We have created you from a single pair of male and female and have divided you into nations and tribes, so that you shall recognize each other not that you despise each other and the most honored in the sight of Allah, is the one who is the most righteous’. Sex, colour, caste, wealth has got no criteria in Islam’. (Surah Hujurat 49:13)

The only criteria in the sight of Allah it is ‘Taqwa’, neither is sex the criteria for Allah (SWT) to reward or to punish a person.

If you read Surah Imran Ch.3 Verse No.195 it says: ‘I will never suffer the loss of any of you, be it male or female, you are companions unto each other’. (Surah Imran 3:195)

I had started my talk by quoting a verse from the Quran From  Surah Al-Ahzab, Ch.33, Verse No.35, which says:

‘Innal Muslimeena Was Muslimati’ - ‘For Muslim men and Muslim women’
‘Wal maomineena Wamomiminati’ – ‘For believing men and women’
‘Wa Kaniteena Wakantaati’ – ‘For devout men and women’
‘Wa Saadikeena Wasaadkaati’ – ‘For true men and women’.
‘Wa Sabireena Wa Saabiraati’ – ‘For men and women who are patient and constant’.
‘Wa Musaddikeena Wamusadikaati’ – ‘Or men and women who give in charity’.
‘Wa Saaeemeena Wasaaimaati’ – ‘For men and women who fast and deny themselves’.
‘Wal hafizeena Furoojaheen Wa hafizati’ – ‘For men and women who guard their chastity’
‘Wa Zaakireenallahu Kasuraon Wazaakiraati’ – ‘For men and women who engage much in Allah’s (SWTala’s) praise’
And the verse ends by ‘Aradallahu Wa magfirataon Wa Airframe Azeena’ – ‘That for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and ample of reward’.

This verse indicates that the spiritual duties, the moral duties, for the men and women in Islam are the same – Both have to believe, both have to pray, both have to fast, both have to give Zakat, etc, etc.

But the women has been given certain concession in Islam. If she is undergoing her menstrual period or pregnancy, she does not have to fast – She can keep those fasts later on, when she is more healthy. In fact, during the menstrual period and during the postnatal period, she need not pray also. She has been given the concession, and neither does she have to compensate it later on. Just because the moral duties of the men and women are equal in Islam will you call such rights in Islam as modernizing or outdated?

Let us analyze the Economical rights – Islam gave economical rights to the women 1,300 years before the West.

An adult Muslim woman can own, she can dispose or disown any of her property without consulting any one, irrespective whether she is married or she is single.

In 1870, it was the first time in England, that the West recognized the rights of the married woman, where she was allowed to own or dispose any of her property without consultation. I do agree that the women were given their economical rights 1300 years ago – these are ancient rights – but the question is – ‘are they modernizing or outdated?’

A women in Islam, if she wishes to work she can work – There is no text in the Quran or the authentic Hadith which prevents or makes it prohibited for a woman to do any work, as long as it is not unlawful, as long as it is within the preview of the Islamic Shariah, as long as she maintains her Islamic dress code. But natural, she cannot take up jobs, which exhibit her beauty and body. Like for example, modeling and film acting, and such kind of jobs. Many of the professions and jobs which are prohibited for the woman are also prohibited for the man, for example serving liquor. For example working in gambling dens – For example doing any unethical or dishonest business – All these jobs are prohibited for both men and women. A true Islamic society requires women to take up profession such as doctors. We do require female Gynecologists, We do require female nurses, We do require female teachers. But, a woman in Islam has got no financial obligations. The financial obligation is laid on the shoulders of the man in the family. Therefore she need not work for her livelihood. But in genuine cases, where there are financial crisis in which both the ends do not meet, she has the option of working. Here too, no one can force her to work. She works out of her own, absolute free will.

Besides the professions I mentioned, she can work in the house and take up tailoring, she can take up embroidery, she can do pottery, she can make baskets, etc. She is also allowed to work in factories and small scale industries, which has been designed exclusively for the ladies. She can work in places which have got separate sections- gents and ladies, because Islam does not agree with intermingling of the sex. She can also do business, and where it comes to doing transactions, where it involves interaction with a foreign male, with a Na-Mehram, she should do it through a father or a brother or husband or a son.

And the best example I can give you is of Bibi Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) who was the wife of our beloved Prophet (may peace be upon him). She was one of the most successful business women of her times and she did the transaction through her husband, Prophet Muhammed (May peace be upon him). A woman in Islam has been given more financial security, as compared to the man.

As I told you earlier, the financial obligation is not put on her shoulder. It is put on the shoulder of the man in the family. It is  the duty of the father or the brother, before she is married and the duty of the husband or the son, after she is married to look after her lodging, boarding, clothing and  financial aspects of her. When she gets married, she is on the receiving end. She receives a gift – she receives a dower or a marital gift, which is called as ‘Mahr’. And it is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Nisa, Ch.4 Verse No.4 which says: ‘Give to the woman in dower, a marital gift’. (Surah Nisa 4:4)

For a marriage to solemnize in Islam, ‘Mahr’ is compulsory. But unfortunately in our Muslim society here, we just keep a nominal ‘Mahr’ to satisfy the Quran, say 151 Rupees, or some people give 786 Rupees and they spend lakhs and lakhs of Rupees on the reception, on the decoration, on the flowers, on the lunch parties, on the dinner parties.

In Islam, there is no lower limit, nor is there  an upper limit for ‘Mahr’ – But when a  person can spend lakhs of Rupees on the reception, surely the ‘Mahr’ should be much more. There are various cultures which have crept into the Muslim societies. They give a small amount of ‘Mahr’ and they expect the wife to get a fridge, to get a T.V set, they expect the wife to give a flat, to get a car, etc., and a large sum of dowry, depending upon the status of the husband. If he is a graduate, they may expect 1 lakh – If he is an engineer they may expect 3 lakhs- If he is a doctor they may expect 5 lakhs.

Read about ‘Mahr’ in ISLAM…

Demanding dowry… a husband demanding dowry from the wife, directly or indirectly is prohibited in Islam. If the parents of the girl give the girl something out of their own free will, it is accepted – But demanding or forcing directly or indirectly, it is  prohibited in Islam. If a Woman works, which she does not have to – whatever earning she gets, it is absolutely her property. She need not spend a single paise on the household – if she wants to spend it is her free will. Irrespective how rich the wife is, it is the duty of the husband to give lodging, boarding, clothing and look after the financial aspects of the wife.

In case of divorce or if a wife gets widowed, she is given financial support for the period of ‘Iddah’ – and if she has children, she is also given child support. Islam gave the right to the women to inherit, centuries ago. If you read the Quran – in several verses, in Surah Nisa, in Surah Baqarah and in Surah Maidah, it is mentioned that a woman irrespective, she is a wife or she is a mother, or a sister, or a daughter, she has a right to inherit – And it has been fixed by Allah (SWT) in the Quran.

Let us go further and analyze the Social Rights of a women in Islam.

Broadly it can be categorized into four sub-headings: Social rights given to a daughter, to a wife, to a  mother and to a sister.

Coming to the social rights given in Islam, to a daughter – Islam prohibits, female infanticide – The killing of female children is forbidden in Islam. It is  mentioned  in Surah Taqveem, Ch. 81, Verse No. 8 and 9: ‘when the female child is buried alive and when she questions you, for what crime was she killed’. (Surah Taqveem 81:8-9)

Not only female infanticide has been prohibited, all sorts of infanticides has been prohibited in Islam, whether it be a male child or a female child.

It is  mention in the Quran in Surah A’nam Ch.6, Verse No.151 that: ‘Kill not your children for want of sustenance for it is Allah that will provide sustenance for you and for children’. (Surah A’nam 6:151)

A similar thing is mentioned in Surah Isra, Ch.17 Verse No.31 which says: ‘Kill not your children for want of sustenance, for it is Allah that will provide sustenance to you and your children, for killing of children is a major sin’. (Surah Isra 17:31)

In the pre-Islamic Arabia, whenever a female child was born mostly she was buried alive. Alhamdullillah, after the spread of Islam this evil practice has been discontinued.

But unfortunately it still continues in our country India. According to a BBC report, in the programme assignment the title of which was: ‘Let Her Die’, there was a British reporter by the name of Emily Beckenen, who came all the way from Britain to India to give us the  statistics of the female infanticide. This programe was shown a few years back on the star T.V. and Alhamdullillah, it is  being shown every month, and just a few days ago it was again re-telecast. In that programe, it gives the statistics, that every day more than 3,000 fetuses are being aborted on being identified that they are females. If you multiply this figure by the number of days, that is multiplied by 365, you get a figure of more than one million female fetuses are being aborted every year in our country. And there are big hoarding and posters in states like TamilNadu and Rajasthan, which says spend 500 Rupees and save 5 lakh Rupees. What does it mean? - That spend Rupees 500 on medical examination like Aminocententus or Ultra Sonography, and identify that the child the mother is carrying. If it is a female you can abort it and you’ll save 5 lakh Rupees – How? The couple of lakhs you spend on upbringing her and the remaining lakhs of Rupees you spend on giving dowry.

According to the report of the government hospital of Tamil Nadu – ‘out of every 10 female children that are born, four are put to death’ – No wonder the female population in India is less than the male population. Female infanticide was continuing in our country since centuries – If you analyze the statistics of the 1901 census, for every 1000 males there were 972 females. According to the 1981 statistics and census, it tells you for every 1000 males you have 934 females. And the latest statistics of 1991 tells you that for every 1000 males you have 927 females. You can analyze that the female ratio is dropping every year – And since science and medicine has advanced, it has helped in this evil practice.

Just because Islam tells you that you should not kill any children whether it be male or female will you call these rights in Islam as modernizing or outdated?

Islam not only prohibits killing of infant children, it also prohibits, and it rebukes you on rejoicing on the birth of a male child and you getting saddened on the news of a female child.

If you read Surah Nahl, Ch.16, Verse No.58 & 59, it tells you that: ‘when news is brought to one of them of a birth of a female child his face darkens and is filled with inward grief’. (Surah Nahl 16:58-59)

He hides himself in shame from his people because of the news he has received. Should he let her live in suffering or should he bury her in dust – Ah! what a evil choice they have. Quran not only prohibits female infanticide, it rebukes at the thought of you rejoicing at the birth of a male child and getting saddened at the birth of a female child. In Islam, a daughter should be brought up correctly and according to a Hadith in ‘Ahmed’, the Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: ‘Anyone who brings up two daughters properly, they will be like this to me on the day of judgment’ – Means, ‘will be very close to me on the day of judgment’.

And there’s another Hadith which says, that ‘Anyone who up brings 2 daughters properly and takes good care and brings them up with love and affection, they will enter Paradise’.

In Islam, there should be no partiality in upbringing of the daughters or the son. According to a Hadith, of our beloved Prophet it said that, ‘In the presence of the Prophet, once a man kissed his son and placed him on his lap but did not do the same to his daughter. The Prophet immediately objected and said that you are unjust – You should have even kissed your daughter and placed her on the other lap’.

Prophet Muhammed (may peace be upon him) did not only speak about justice, he also practiced it.

Let us analyze, the rights of a wife in Islam.

All the previous civilizations, they have considered the women to be an ‘instrument of the devil’. The Quran refers to the women as ‘Mohsana’, that is a ‘fortress against the devil’. And if a woman, who is good, marries a man, she prevents him from going on the wrong path and keeps him on the ‘Siratulmustakeem’ – that is the correct path. There’s a Hadith in which Prophet Muhammed (may peace be upon him) said that:  ‘there is no monasticism in Islam’.

And again according to Sahih Bukhari, Volume No. 7, Ch. No. 3 Hadith No 4 it says that: “the Prophet ordained the young men, all those who have the means to marry, they should marry – For it will help them to lower their gaze and guard their modesty.”

There is another Hadith related by  Anas, in which the Prophet said: ‘Any one who marries completes half his deen’.

Once somebody asked me, that; ‘does it imply that if I marry twice I will be completing my full deen?’ The person misunderstood the message of the Prophet.

When the Prophet said that: ‘When you marry you complete half your deen’ - It means that when you marry it shields you from promiscuity, it shields  you from fornication, it shields you from homosexuality, which lead to half the sin in this world. Only when  you marry, do you have  opportunity to become husband or a wife – Only when you marry do you have opportunity to become a father or a mother. And the duties of the mother and the father and that of a husband and wife are very important in Islam. So it makes no difference whether a man marries once twice or thrice or four times – He yet completes only half his deen.

The Quran says that: ‘We have put love into the hearts of the husband and wife’.

If you read Surah Rum, Ch. 30, Verse No. 21 it says that: ‘And amongst our signs We have created for  you mates or companions, so that you may dwell in them in tranquillity and we have put love and mercy between your hearts’. (Surah Rum 30:21)

According to Surah Nisa, Ch.4, Verse No.21, marriage is considered as a misaq, a sacred  agreement, a sacred contract.

According to Surah Nisa, Ch.4, Verse No.19, it says: ‘You are prohibited to inherit women against their will’ – Means, to marry, the permission of both the parties are required. (Surah Nisa 4:19)

It is compulsory that the man and women both should agree to marry. No one – not even the father can force their daughter to marry against her wishes.

There’s a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Volume No. 7, Ch. No. 43, Hadith No. 69, which says ‘that a lady she was forced by her father to marry against her wishes’ – And she went to the Prophet and the Prophet invalidated the marriage’. Another Hadith in Ibn-e-Humbal, Hadith No. 2469, it says ‘that a daughter was forced by her father to get married – And when the daughter approached the Prophet, the Prophet said you can either continue, or if you wish you can invalidate the marriage.’

That means, the consent of both the male and the female is required. In Islam, a women is considered as a homemaker -  if they are occupied more in the home. In Islam, a woman, she is not married to a master that she should be treated like a slave - She is married to and is equal.

And there is a Hadith which says in Ibn-Hambal – Hadith No 736, 7396: – It says that: ‘the most perfect of the believers are those that are best in character and behavior, and those that are best to their family and their wives’. Islam gives equal rights to the man and woman. The Quran clearly mentions that men and women, husband and wife have equal rights in all aspects, except leadership in the family.

It is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Baqarah Ch.2, Verse No.228: ‘the women  have been given rights similar against them on equitable terms but the men have a degree higher’. (Surah Baqarah 2:228)

Most of the Muslims have misunderstood this verse, when it says ‘a men have a degree higher’ – As I said we should analyze the Quran as a whole. And its  mentioned in Surah Nisa, Ch. 4, Verse No.34 which says: ‘The men are the protectors and maintainers of the women, for Allah (SWT) has given one of them more strength than the other and they give them their means’. (Surah Nisa 4:34)

People say the word ‘Kawwam’ means, ‘one degree higher in superiority’ – But actually the word ‘Kawwam’ comes from the root word ‘Ikamah’. ‘Ikamah’ means for example ‘when you give the Ikamah before prayers – You stand up’. So ‘Ikamah’ means to standupso the word ‘Kawwam’ means one degree higher in responsibility, not one degree higher in superiority.

Even if you read the commentary of ‘Ibne-Kathir’ – He says that the word ‘Kawwam’ means one degree higher in responsibility, not one degree higher in superiority. And this responsibility, should be carried out by mutual consent of both husband and wife. It is  mentioned in Surah Baqarah, Ch.2, Verse No.187, which says: ‘Your wives are your garments, and you are their garments’. (Surah Baqarah 2:187)

What’s the objective of garments – It is  used to conceal and to beautify. The husband and wife, should conceal each others faults, and they should beautify each other. Its a relationship of hands and gloves. The Quran mentions that: ‘even if you  do not like your wife, you should treat her kindly’.

It is  mentioned in Surah Nisa, Ch.4, Verse No.19, that: ‘Treat your wives on a footing of equity and kindness even if you dislike her – For you may be disliking a thing for which Allah has made good for you’. (Surah 4:19)

Even if you dislike your wife you have to treat her kindly and with equity. Just because the rights of a wife are equal to those of the husband in Islam, will you call such rights in Islam as modernizing or outdated?

Let us analyze the rights of a Mother.

The only thing above respect to Mother, is the worship of Allah (SWT) – It is mentioned in Ch.17, Verse No.28-29, it says that:

‘Allah has ordained for you, that you worship none but Him, and to be kind to our parents And if any one or both of them reach old age do not say a word of contempt or repel them but address them with honour, and speak to them with kindness, and lower your wing of humility and pray to Allah (SWT) -‘My Lord, bless them as they have cherished me in childhood’. (Surah Isra 17:28-29)

Surah Nisa, Ch. No. 4, Verse No.1 says: ‘Respect the womb that bore you’. (Surah Nisa 4:1)

Surah A’nam, Ch.6, Verse No.151, says: ‘You have to be kind to your parents’. (Surah A’nam 6:151)

Again in Surah Luqman Ch.31, Verse No.14; it again says the same thing that: ‘We have enjoined on the human beings to be kind to his parents. In travail upon travail, did their mother bore them and in years twain was their weaning’. (Surah Luqman 31:14)

A similar thing is repeated again in Surah Ahqaf, Ch.46, Verse No.15: ‘We have enjoined on the human beings to be kind to his parents. In pain did their mother bore them and in pain did she give them birth’. (Surah Ahqaf 46:15)

According to a Hadith related in ‘Ahmed’, as well as in ‘Ibn-e-Majah’ – It says ‘Paradise lies at the feet of the mother’.

That  does not mean that if my mother is walking on the road and if she steps on muck and filth – that thing becomes Paradise. It means that after you fulfill your basic duties, if you respect your mother, if you are kind to your mother, If you are honorable to your mother, you will Inshaallah enter Paradise.

Another Hadith related in Sahih Bukhari in Volume 8, Ch. No. 2 Hadith No. 2, as well as in Sahih-Muslim – It says that a man asked the Prophet: ‘Who requires the maximum love and respect and my companionship in this world? The Prophet replied – ‘your mother’. ‘Who is next’? – ‘your mother’. ‘Who is next?’ – ‘your mother’. The man asked for the fourth time, – ‘Who is next’. The Prophet replied ‘your father’. 75% of the love and respect goes to the mother and 25% of the love and respect goes to the father. Three fourth of the better part of the love and respect goes to the mother – One fourth of the remaining part of the love and respect goes to the father. In short, the gold medal goes to the mother, the silver medal goes to the mother, the bronze medal goes to the mother and the father may be he gets the consolation prize.

I am very happy that my brothers have appreciated it – Otherwise  normally I always apologize, that if I have hurt the feelings of my brothers, I am sorry – That is  what Islam tells me. But, I’m glad, that my brothers here, they have appreciated Islam, Al-hamdullillah.

Let us analyze the rights of the sisters in Islam.

According to Surah Taubah, Ch. 9, Verse No.71, it says: ‘The men and the women they are maintainers and supporters of each other’. (Surah Taubah 9:71)

The word ‘Auliya’ here means ‘supporters’ and ‘maintainers’ – they are supporters and maintainers of each other. In short they are brothers and sisters unto each other, unless otherwise.

Prophet Muhammed (may peace be upon him) he said, ‘The women are the ‘Shakat’ -‘Shakat’ means sister’. It also means ‘half’, as humankind has been divided into two halves – men and women – It refers to as ‘half’, also as ‘sisters’. There are so many social rights that we can, that we can speak for weeks together.

But due to short of time, I will not be able to touch on the important topics such as Polygamy, such as divorce, such as Talaq, divorce, because I have opted to spend more time on the other topics.

Now let us analyze the Educational rights given to the women in Islam.

The first 5 verses which were revealed of the Quran Shareef were from Surah Alaq, or Surah Iqra, Ch. 96, Verse No. 1 to 5 which says: ‘Read, recite or proclaim in the name of thy lord, Who has created the human beings from a congealed  clot of blood, a leech like substance – Read, thy Lord is most bountiful – Who has taught the use of the pen – Who has taught the human beings that which he knew-not’.

The first guidance given in the Quran Shareef to the humankind was not to pray, was not to fast, was not to give charity – It was read - Islam pays utmost importance to education.

The Prophet ordained the parents, the father and the mother, to see to it that they gave Religious education to their daughter and after a lady married, it was the duty of the husband to provide her with the Religious education. If he couldn’t do it himself, and if she wanted, he should allow her to go somewhere else to acquire the education.

According to Sahih Bukhari, the women were very enthusiastic to acquire knowledge, and they once told the Prophet: ‘You are usually surrounded by men – why do not you give us one particular day so that we too can ask you questions’ – And the Prophet agreed. Besides he himself going, he sent many other of his Sahabas to the women, to give them education. Imagine, 1400 years ago, when the women were ill treated and were only used as chattels – leave aside being educated, Islam asked the women to be educated. We have examples of several Muslim women who are scholars and the best example I can give you is of Bibi Aisha’ (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the daughter of Hazrat Abu-Bakr, the first Khalifa of Islam, (may Allah be pleased with him), and the wife of our beloved Prophet Muhammed (may peace be upon him). She gave guidance even to the Sahabas and to the Khalifas. One of  her famous student Urwah-Ibn-Zubair – She said that: ‘I have not seen a greater scholar than Aisha’ in the field of learning of the Quran, in obligatory duties, in lawful and unlawful matters, in literature and poetry, in Arab history.

She was not only expert in the Religious field, she had profound knowledge of medicine – Whenever the foreign delegates came to the Prophet and discussed, she used to memorize the remedies. She was well versed in the field of math, and many times the companions came to her to ask problems of ‘Mirath’ that is, ‘Inheritance’ – And how much share could be divide how much share should be given to the each individual. She is said to have guided all the four Khalifas, including the companions.

And she also gave guidance, many a times to Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) and she herself has narrated 2210 Hadiths. According to AbuUmm… according to Abu Moosa, who was a famous Jurist, he said that; ‘Whenever we companions had lack of knowledge on a matter, we went to Hazrat Aisha’ (May Allah be pleased with her), and definitely she had knowledge about it’. She is said to have taught more than 88 scholars. In short, she was a scholar of the scholars.

There are several examples, even of Safiya (may Allah be pleased with her) who was the wife of the Prophet, who was an expert on Fiqah Islamic Jurisprudence. And according to Imam-an-Nauvi, ‘She was the most intellectual women of that time’.

Another example is Umme – Salma (may Allah be pleased with her) who was the wife of the beloved Prophet. According to Ibn Hajar, ‘She has taught 32 different scholars’.

There are several examples – Fatima-Binte-Kais, she is said to have a discussion on Fiqh, for a full day with Hazrat Aisha’ and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and still they could not prove her wrong. According to Imam-an-Nauvi, ‘she migrated in the early days and she had profound knowledge’. Other examples like Umme Salim, who was the mother of Anas – she is said to be very well versed in the field of Dawah. Other examples are Saeeda Nafisa, who was the grand daughter of Hasan and she also said to have taught Imam Shafi, who was the founder of the one of schools of thought.

There are several examples – Even Umme-Ad-darda, who was the wife of Abul-Ad-darda, she is said be an expert in science. And even Imam Bukhari has said that she was an expert in her field – You can give several examples. At the time when the women were ill treated, at the time when  women were buried alive, when they were born, at that time Islam had women scholars, in the field of medicine, in the field of science, in the field of Religion. Because Islam tells that every woman should be educated, – Will you call such women’s right’s in Islam as modernizing or oudated?

Let us discuss the legal rights given to a woman in Islam.

According to the Islamic law, men and women are equal – The Shariah protects the life and property of a man and woman both. If a man murders a woman he too will receive the ‘Hurth’ punishment – That is Capital punishment of ‘Kisas’. According to Surah Baqarah Ch. 2, Verse No.178 and 179, ‘he too shall be killed’.

Like wise if a woman murders, she too will be killed. According to the Islamic law of ‘Kisas’, men and women – irrespective  the injury be of the eye, of the nose, of the ear, of the body – both receive equal punishment and if the guardian of the murderer, even it be a woman – If she says, that forgive the murderer and she accepts ‘Dia’, that is compensation – her opinion cannot be rejected – They have to accept it.

And if there’s difference of opinion between the relatives of the person who is murdered – And some say that the murderer should be killed and some say that he should be forgiven and ‘Dia’ should be accepted – people should prevent the relatives from killing that murderer. And irrespective whether the witness or the opinion is given by a man or woman, it has same weight.

According to Surah Maida, Ch.5, Verse No.30 – It says: ‘As to the thief, whether he be man or a woman, cut off his or her hand as a punishment for his crime, an example from Allah (SWT)’. (Surah Maida 5:30)

Means, if a person robs, irrespective whether he is a man or a woman his or her hands should be chopped – The punishment is the same. According to Surah Nur, Ch.24, Verse No.2, it says:

‘If any commits fornication, be it a man or a woman, flog them with 100 stripes’. (Surah Nur 24:2)

The punishment for fornication in Islam irrespective whether it is a man or a woman, it is the same – Flogging with 100 stripes. The punishment for men and women, is the same in Islam.

In Islam a woman is allowed to give witness. Imagine, Islam gave right to a woman to be a witness, 14 centuries ago. Even now in as late as 1980, the Jewish  Rabai, they were considering that whether the women should be given a right to act as a witness or not – and Islam gave that right 1400 years ago.

According to Surah Nur, Ch.24, Verse No.4, it is said: ‘If any of you put a charge against the chastity of a woman, produce 4 witnesses, and if they falter, flog them with 80 stripes’. (Surah Nur 24:4)

In Islam for a small crime, you require 2 witness – for a big crime you require 4 witnesses. Accusing a woman falsely is a big crime in Islam, therefore you require 4 witnesses.

Now a days you see in the modern society, you find men abusing women and calling them all sorts of name. They call them prostitutes etc, and what nothing is done.

In a Islamic State, if a man calls her a ‘prostitute’ in public or anywhere else, and if she takes that man to court – and if that man cannot produce 4 witnesses or even if he produces 4 witnesses and anyone of them falter, all of them will receive 80 lashes each, and in future all their evidence will be rejected. Islam gives utmost importance to the chastity of the woman. When a lady marries, she normally adopts the name of her husband. In Islam she has the option of either keeping her husband’s name, either adopting the name of the husband, or maintaining her maiden name. And maintaining the maiden name is recommended in Islam – And we find in several Muslim societies that women, even after they get married they aintain their maiden name, because according to the Islamic law men and women are equal. Will you call such rights in Islam modernizing or oudated?

Let us analyze the political rights.

According to Surah Tauba, Ch.9, Verse No.71, which I quoted earlier, which says: ‘The men and the women they are supporters of each other’. (Surah Tauba 9:71)

Supporters not only Socially – even Politically – Politically, men and women should support each other. Islam gives women the right to vote. If you read Surah Al-Mumtahina, Ch.60, Verse No.12, it says that: ‘O Prophet when the believing women come to thee with an oath of fealty’. (Surah Al-Mumtahina 60:12)

Here, the Arabic word is ‘Bayan’ – And ‘Bayan’ means much more than our modern, present day election, – because Prophet Muhammed (may peace be upon him), he was not only the messenger of Allah, but he was also the head of the state and women came to the Prophet and they agreed with him being the head of the state.

So Islam gives the woman even the right to vote. Women can even take part in law making. And according to the famous Hadith in which Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he was discussing with the Sahabas, and considering putting an upper limit on the ‘Mahr’, since young men were discouraged from getting married – a lady from the back seat she objected and said When the Quran says in Surah Nisa Ch.4, Verse No.20 that:

‘you can even give a heap of treasure, a heap of gold in ‘Mahr’, when Quran puts no limit on ‘Mahr’, who is Umar to put a limit (may Allah be pleased with him) and immediately Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) he said; ‘Umar is wrong and the lady is right’.

Imagine, she was a common lady – If it would  have been a famous lady, the name of the lady would be mentioned in the Hadith. Since the Hadith does not mention the name of the lady, we can understand that the lady was a common lady. Means, even a common lady can object to the ‘Khalifa’, the head of the state. And in technical terms it would be called that – ‘she is objecting to the breach of the constitution’. That means a woman can even take part in law making.

Women have even taken part in the battle field. There is a full chapter in the Sahih Bukhari mentioning women in the battle field – Women gave water – they give first aid to the soldiers and there is a particular mention of a woman by the name of Nasiba, who were among the few, who protected our beloved Prophet during the battle of Ohud. Because the Quran says ‘Man is the protector of the ‘Woman’, under normal circumstances, the women should not go to the battle field. It is  the duty of the man. Only when required, under necessity are women allowed – and they should go to the battle field – Otherwise no. Otherwise you’ll have the same position as you are having in the USA.

There women were allowed to join the battle since 1901 but they were not allowed to take active part – they only played the part of a nurse. Later on after the ‘Feminist Movement’ had started in 1973, the ‘Feminist movement’ demanded – ‘Why aren’t women allowed to take active part in the battle field?’ So the American government allowed – After 1976 women, were allowed to take active part in the battle field. And last year according to a report of the defense department, of the defense department of America, which was  released on the 23rd of April, 1993 it said that – ‘90 people were sexually assaulted in a convention, out of which 83 were women and 117 officers were charged with in disciplinary action’. Imagine in one convention only, 83 women sexually assaulted. What was the crime of those 117 officers?

They made the women run and they snatched at their clothes – They made them parade absolutely nude without even covering the genital parts – They were made to have sex in public. Is this what you call ‘Women’s rights’? If you think that this is what is ‘Women’s right’, then you can keep your rights to yourselves. We do not want our sisters, our daughters our mothers to be sexually assaulted. And there was a uproar in the parliament and the President, Bill Clinton – he himself had to publicly apologize and he said; ‘Necessary action will be taken’. And you know when politicians say ‘necessary action will be taken, what happens.

So Islam allows women to take part in the battle field only when required. But there also they should maintain their Islamic Hijab and the Islamic ethics, and their modesty.

Before I conclude my talk, I’d like to give an example. As I said in the beginning of my talk, Islam believes in equality between men and women – Equality does not mean identicality. Suppose in a classroom 2 students, student ‘A’ and ‘B’, during an examination both come out first – Both secure 80% marks – 80 out of 100. Out of the hundreds of students, 2 come out first ‘A’ and ‘B’. When you analyze the question paper, the question paper has 10 different questions, each carrying 10 marks.

In question 1 student ‘A’ got 9 out of 10, and student ‘B’ got 7 out of 10 – So in question 1 student ‘A’ was higher than student ‘B’. In question 2, student ‘A’ got 7 out of 10 and student ‘B’ got 9 out of 10; – Student ‘B’ was higher than student ‘A’ in question number 2. In question 3 both of them got 8 out of 10, both were equal. So when we add up the marks of all the ten questions, both student ‘A’ and ‘B’ got 80 out of 100. So in short, student ‘A’ and student ‘B’ are over all equal. In some question ‘A’ is higher than ‘B’, in some question ‘B’ is higher than ‘A’, in others both are equal.

In the same fashion, taking the example that since Allah has given man more strength – Suppose a thief enters the house; will you tell, ‘I believe in women’s rights – I believe in women’s rights’ – will you tell your mother, your sister and your daughter, to go and fight the thief?’

No, but natural you’ll fight him – If required they may interfere – under normal circumstances since Allah has given you more physical strength, you have to go and tackle the thief. So here, in physical strength, man is one degree higher than the woman.

Let us take another example where… where it comes to giving respect to the – where it comes to respecting the parents – The children are supposed to respect the mother 3 times more than the father. Here the women have one degree higher than the men – Over all both equal.

So Islam believes in equality, not identically – Men and women are over all equal in Islam.

‘This was in brief, not in detail’. This was in brief, the highlights, of ‘the Women’s Rights in Islam’. After this what the Muslim society did is different – Many of the Muslim societies did not give the women their rights and they deviated away from the Quran and the Sunnah. The Western society is largely responsible for this – because of the Western societies, many Muslim societies have become over protective, over precautions and have gone to one extreme and deviated away from the Quran and the Sunnah.

On the other extreme, some of the Muslim societies upgrade with the Western culture, and followed their culture. I want to tell the Western society that if you analyze the women’s rights in Islam according to the Quran and the Sunnah – you will realize it is  modernizing and not outdated.

Lastly, I would like to thank those people who have helped and supported me. If there is any one person who requires credit for me being here, it is my beloved mother Mrs. Roshan Naik – It was because of her love, care and guidance that I am here today. I will be doing injustice if I do not include the name of my father Dr. Abdul Karim Naik, as well as my other family members, specially, my Brother Mohammed Naik. And last, but not the least my wife, who has encouraged me since one and a quarter year, since we have been married and thus I have been able to strive harder in this field.

Rights of Women in Islam : HIJAB

Rights of Women in Islam : Hijab

Over the years, the dress code among Muslim women has been given great attention, especially in relation to the hijab practice in which is considered as a symbol of “oppression” towards Muslim women. While Islam is certainly not the only religion to introduce the practice of covering head, it continues to be the centre of attack and heavily discussed as the women’s right issue especially outside Muslim world. Furthermore, this has been included as a political agenda in some countries, which results in Muslim women being oppressed and their freedom to practice their religion was taken away. Sadly, we also see that some so-called “Muslim” secularists and hypocrites, under the false insinuation that wearing the hijab is oppression for women, make the ridiculous claim that the Quran “does not make a statement about covering the hair”. Obviously, this claim stems from their arrogance combined with their sheer ignorance on the matter. The purpose of this article is to answer these Critics’ claims to show them that their lies do not hold water.

In the Quran we read the following injunction about the hijab:

“Oh Prophet! tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient that they should be known (as such) and not molested and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surah al-Ahzaab : 59)

In the above verse, women are required to cast their outer garments for them to be recognised as a decent woman, and further to avoid any harassment in any way. The word used in the verse, jalabib (plural of jilbab), refers to an outer garment which covers the body completely, and so this is also an argument in favor of covering the hair. While the above verse does not specifically mention what is the right dress code applied (apart from the fact that women should cover their body), it clearly shows that the basic underlying concept is modesty. It is widely agreed that women who dressed and behaved modestly are respectable, and it helps in having respectful relationship with other women and men in their daily life. This is the most important reason behind the rules set in Islam, in which it gives total respect to women with regards to their body and preserve their dignity, and at the same time act as a guard and protection to them, at least to a certain extent, from being physically and emotionally harassed.

We have a general concept that Hijab is only for women and men are free from this limitation but this is not true. There is more restriction on men. They are asked to put there eyes down and they are not allowed to see a woman delibrately. If you read the Quran – before the mentioning of the ‘Hijab’ for the women, the Quran mentioned the ‘Hijab’, for the man. It is mentioned in Surah Nur, Ch. No. 24, Verse No. 30, it says to the believing man, that:

“He should lower his gaze and guard his modesty”. (Surah Nur : 30)

Such a just religion can never be found… except Islam, because it is the religion of Allah. The next Verse, Surah Nur, Ch. 24, Verse No. 31, says:

“And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty, that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof, that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband’s fathers, their sons, their husband’s sons, their brothers or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hand posses, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye believers ! Turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.” (Surah Nur : 31)

Again, the main subject behind the Islamic dress code is modesty. Coupled with a number of hadiths, this verse being the only verse within the Quran to mention about wearing veil to be included in the package to safeguard women’s dignity. Besides these, she should maintain the Hijab. The criteria for Hijab in Islam, can be found in the Quran, and the Sahih Hadith.

There are six criteria – 1st is extent, which is the only difference between a man and a woman. For the man, he has to be covered from the naval to the knee. For the woman, her complete body should be covered – the only part that can be seen, is the face and the hands up to the wrist. If she wishes to cover them, she is most welcome, but it is not compulsory that she should cover it.  Otherwise the full body should be covered. This is the only criteria which differs, between the man and the woman.

The second criteria is that, the clothes she wears, should not be so tight, that it reveals the figure.

The clothes she wears… third point – it should not be so transparent, so that you can see through.

And the fourth point – she should not wear glamorous clothes, or he should not wear glamorous clothes, which attracts the opposite sex.

The fifth point is that a person should not wear cloth, which resembles that of the opposite sex – like you find men wearing earnings. If you wear one earring, it signifies something else – if you wear two earrings, it signifies something else. It is prohibited in Islam.

And the last criteria is, you should not wear clothes which… that resemble of an unbeliever. These are the six basic criteria of Hijab, in Islam.

If we analyse the society, the maximum number of crime that takes place in any country, it is in America. According to a report by the FBI in 1990, in the year 1990 ‘One thousand, two hundred & fifty five women were raped’. These are only the reported cases. And the report says ‘Only 16% of the cases were reported’. If you want the exact figure, multiply 1,02,555 with 6.25, and you get the answer – more than 6,40,000 ladies were raped in America only in 1990. And if you divide this by the number of days in a year, divide by 365, you get a figure of One thousand, seven hundred and fifty six women are raped every day, in America, in the year 1990.

And the report says… ‘Every day One thousand, nine hundred ladies are raped’. It is the report of 1991. Now the Americans got more bold and the last report which came in Autumn, in 1993, it says… ‘Every 1.3 minute, one woman is raped’ - you know why? America has given the women, more rights, and more women are being raped. Out of 16% that are reported, only 10% are arrested. Means only 1.6% of the cases, are arrested. Out of that, 50% are let free before the trial – Means, only 0.8% of the rape cases, are held. Means, if a man rapes One hundred & twenty five ladies, the chances of his being caught, is one. Who would not like to try. One hundred & twenty five ladies you rape, and you get caught only once. Out of that, 50% time you get a punishment of less than 1 year… though the USA law tells you that… ‘For rape, you have got a punishment of life imprisonment’. But they say… ‘It is happened only the first time… the raqpist is caught the first time – so lets give him a chance, and a punishment of less than 1 year’.

Even in India, according to the National Crime Bureau report, which had come in the papers, on the 1st of December 1992, it said that… ‘Every 54 minutes, one case of rape is reported in India. Every 26 minutes, one case of molestation – every 1 hour 43 minutes, one case of dowry death. If you analyse the total number of cases of rape that are taking in our country, it will be… every couple of minutes, one case of rape. I am asking a simple question – if you ask every lady to do Hijab, will the rape case in USA remain the same, will it decrease, or will it increase? If you apply the Hijab for every lady in India, will the rate of rape decrease, will it remain the same, or will it increase?

You should understand Islam, as a whole. Even suppose, after that even, after a lady does Hijab, or irrespective a lady does Hijab, or not, a man is commanded: ‘He should lower his gaze’ - and if suppose after that, if a man commits rape… in Islam, he receives capital punishment – you call it a barbaric law? I have asked this question to several people. Suppose… I have asked this question to many of the gents. Suppose your sister is raped, and if you are made the judge – leave aside what Islam tells you, leave aside what Indian law tells you, leave aside what American law tells you – If you are made the judge, what punishment will you give to the rapist of your sister? And all have said… ‘Death sentence’. Few went to the extreme of saying… ‘I will torture him to death’. Want to ask you a question… ‘If you apply the Islamic Shariah law in America, will the rape case decrease, will it remain the same, or will it increase? If you apply the Shariah law in India, will the rape case decrease, will it remain the same, or will it increase?

So but natural, let us analyse practically. You say you have given women rights theoretically, but practically, you are degrading her to a status of a concubine and a mistress. Suppose two ladies… two twin sisters were equally beautiful – if they are walking down the street, and if round the corner there is a hooligan, who is waiting for a catch… who is waiting to tease a girl. Both twin sisters are walking, both are equally beautiful – one is in the Hijab… Islamic Hijab – one is wearing a mini or a skirt. Which girl will that hooligan tease? Which girl will he tease? But natural, the one in the short or the mini girl. If a girl is wearing a normal salwar kameez, with her head open… may be the salwar kameez tight, and the other girl is wearing a Islamic Hijab – Which girl will he tease? But natural, the girl who is not in Hijab. It is a practical proof, that Hijab is been ordained in Islam not to degrade the woman, but to protect her modesty.

While most Western societies often consider veil to cover women’s hair as a radical and violation to women’s right, Muslim women feel that veil gives them freedom. Different from the definition of freedom set by the West, a Muslim woman who follows Islamic dress code consider themselves free from being judged by her physical features, but rather to be judged by her character. What important is their intellectual and personality, and not the discrimination for their beauty. While women always emphasize on their beauty to fulfil the standard of attractiveness set by men, Muslim women set themselves free from being such a display object , but rather consider themselves as humans who have an exclusive right over themselves.

Following the Islamic dress code including wearing veil to cover women’s hair obviously has no effect on women’s social interaction. The rights of each Muslim woman to get proper education and enjoy equal right with other women and men is not denied although they are required to wear veil and cover themselves according to Islamic requirement. With that reason, the word “oppressive” assigned to Islamic women’s dress code certainly has no basis at all. Unfortunately, this has been a favourite issue for some countries to deny the right of these Muslim women from getting proper education and play a major role in the society, without realising that they give a heavy burden upon these Muslim women, and that is what we call oppression!

If these so-called “Muslim” critics do not wish to follow Islam, the world is full of many other religions they can choose from. Christianity, for example, will let you do whatever you want, eat whatever you want, drink whatever you want, or wear whatever you want, as long as you accept the blood of Jesus to cleanse your sins. But if these same critics know that Islam is the truth, then please do not play games with it just because they do not wish to wear the hijab. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had stated that in later generations of his Ummah there would be  “… women who would be dressed but naked and on top of their heads (what looks like) camel humps. Curse them for they are truly cursed.” (Sahih Muslim).

We would like to challenge these critics to find a single historian who will say that the Muslims in the time of Muhammad (PBUH) did not believe that wearing a head scarf was commanding by Allah and His Messenger. Just one, simple request… otherwise, desist.

The Gaza Strip : A Humanitarian Implosion

The Gaza Strip : A Humanitarian Implosion

Israel MURDERS nearly 300 Palestinians, innocent unarmed civilians which includes women and children.

The Israeli military, one of the most powerful military forces on earth, has held the 1.5 million civilians captive within Gaza for years.  Like the “dog in the manger,” Israel has also deprived these civilians of the most basic necessities of life, such as food and water.  Still not satisfied with their under-reported, nearly black-out atrocities against Palestinian civilians; not satisfied with the hunger, fear, malnutrition, misery and slow death Israel has delivered to the Palestinians; not satisfied with the Palestinian homes, lands and orchards Israel has already stolen from rightful Palestinian owners, the Israeli interlopers have now ordered their massive military to bomb Gaza neighborhoods in a ferocious air attack that has reportedly killed hundreds of civilians.

Israel is pursuing a genocidal policy against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Since the Israeli political and military elites do not know how to deal with the Gaza Strip, they opted for a knee-jerk reaction in the form of massive killing of citizens whenever the Palestinians in the Strip dared to protest by force their strangulation and imprisonment. The end result so far is the escalation of the indiscriminate killing of Palestinians.

Renowned Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe, writes about the rationale behind Israel’s latest round of attacks on Gaza and sees a deliberately genocidal policy by Israel towards the Palestinians. According to evidence collected on behalf of UN agencies in Gaza, the Israeli military has often targeted civilian property, killing and injuring dozens of children, during  “Operation Warm Winter” and other incursions.

Will we not act together and condemn the barbaric crime and terrorist act of Israel? Will we continue to let Palestinians in Gaza die in silence? How shall we STOP this horrific crime?

Canadian convert Katherine Bullock marvels at becoming a Muslim
by Katherine Bullock

What am I doing down here? I wonder, my nose and forehead pressed to the floor as I kneel in prayer. My kneecaps ache, my arm muscles strain as I try to keep the pressure off my forehead. I listen to strange utterings of the person praying next to me. It’s Arabic, and they understand what they are saying, even if I don’t. So. I make up my own words, hoping God will be kind to me, a Muslim only 12 hours old. OK. God, I converted to Islam because I believe in you, and because Islam makes sense to me. Did I really just say that? I catch myself, bursting into tears. What would my friends say if they saw me like this, kneeling, nose pressed to the floor?…They’d laugh at me. Have you lost your mind? they’d ask. You can’t seriously tell me you are religious. Religious…I was once a happy ’speculative atheist,’ how did I turn into a believer and a Muslim? I ask myself. I turn my mind into the past and attempt a whirlwind tour through my journey. But where did it begin? Maybe it started when I first met practicing Muslims. This was in 1991, at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

I was an open-minded, tolerant, liberal woman. 24 years old. I saw Muslim women walking around the international Centre and I felt sorry for them. I knew they were oppressed. My sorrow increased when I asked them why they covered their hair, why they wore long sleeves in summer, why they were so ill-treated in Muslim countries, and they told me that they wore the veil, and they dressed so, because God asked them too. Poor things. What about their treatment in Muslim countries? That’s culture, they would reply. I knew they were deluded, socialised/brainwashed from an early age, into believing this wicked way of treating women. But I noticed how happy they were, how friendly they were, how solid they seemed. I saw Muslim men walking around the international centre.

There was even a man from Libya – the land of terrorists. I trembled when I saw them, lest they do something to me in the name of God. I remembered the television images of masses of rampaging Arab men burning effiges of President Bush, all in the name of God. What a God they must have, I thought. Poor things that they even believe in God, I added, secure in the truth that God was an anthropomorphic projection of us weak human beings. But I noticed that these men were very friendly. I noticed how helpful they were. I perceived an aura of calmness. What a belief they must have, I thought. But it puzzled me. I had read the Quran, and hadn’t detected anything special about it. That was before, when the Gulf War broke out. What kind of God would persuade men to go War, to kill innocent citizens of another country, to rape women, to demonstrate against the US?

I decided I’d better read the Holy book on whose behalf they claimed they were acting. I read a Penguin classic, surely a trustworthy book, and I couldn’t finish it, I disliked it so much. Here was a paradise described with virgin women in it for the righteous (what was a righteous woman to do with a virgin woman in Paradise?); here was a God destroying whole cities at a stroke.

No wonder the women are oppressed, and these fanatics storm around burning the US flag, I thought. But the Muslims I put this to seemed bewildered. Their Quran didn’t say things in that way. Perhaps I had a bad translation?

Suddenly the praying person I am following stands up. I too stand up, my feet catching on the long skirt I wear; I almost trip. I sniff, trying to stop the tears. I must focus on praying to God. Dear God, I am here because I believe in you, and because during my research of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism, Islam made the most sense.

Bending over, my hands at my knees, I try hard to reassure myself. God. Please help me to be a good Muslim. A Muslim! Kathy, how could you – a white western women who is educated – convert to a religion which makes its women second class citizens!

But Kingston’s Muslims became my friends, I protest. They welcomed me into their community warmly, without question. I forgot that they were oppressed and terrorists. This seems like the start of my journey. But I was still an atheist. Or was I?

I had looked into the starry night, and contemplated the universe. The diamond stars strewn across the dark sky twinkled mysterious messages to me. I felt hooked up to something bigger than myself. Was it a collective human consciousness? Peace and tranquility flowed to me from the stars. Could I wrench myself from this feeling and declare there is no higher being? No higher consciousness? Haven’t you ever doubted the existence of God? I would ask my believing Christian and Muslim friends. No, they replied. No? No? This puzzled me.

Was God that obvious? How come I couldn’t see God. It seemed too much a stretch of my imagination. A being out there, affecting the way I lived. How could God listen to billions of people praying, and deal with each second of that person’s life? It’s impossible. Maybe a First Cause, but one who intervened? And what about the persistence of injustice in the world? Children dying in war. A just, good God couldn’t allow that. God didn’t make sense. God couldn’t exist. Besides, we evolved, so that disposed of a First Cause anyway.

We kneel down again, and here I am, sniffing, looking sideways at my fingers on the green of my new prayer mat. I like my prayer mat. It has a velvetty touch to it, and some of my favourite colours: a purple mosque on a green background. There is a path leading to a black entrance of the mosque and it beckons me. The entrance to the mosque seems to contain the truth, it is elusive, but it is there. I am happy to be beckoned to this entrance.

When I was much younger I had a complete jigsaw picture of the world. It fell apart sometime during the third or fourth year of my undergraduate study. In Kingston I had reminded myself that I had once been a regular churchgoer, somewhat embarrassed, since I knew that religious people were slushy/mushy, quaint, boring, old fashioned people. Yet God had seemed self-evident to me then. The universe made no sense without a Creator Being who was also omnipotent.

Leaving church I had always had a feeling of lightness and happiness. I felt the loss of that feeling. Could it be that I had once had a connection to God which was now gone? Maybe this was the start of my journey? I tried to pray again, but found it extraordinarily difficult. Christians told me that people who didn’t believe in Lord Jesus Christ were doomed. What about people who’ve never heard of Jesus? Or people who follow their own religion? And society historically claimed women were inferior because Christianity told us it was Eve’s punishment; women were barred from studying, voting, owning land. God was an awful man with a long white beard. I couldn’t talk to him. I couldn’t follow Christianity, therefore God couldn’t exist.

But then I discovered feminists who believed in God, Christian women who were feminists, and Muslim women who believed Islam did not condone a lot of what I thought integral to their religion. I started to pray and call myself a ‘post-christian feminist believer.’

I felt that lightness again; maybe God did exist. I carefully examined my life’s events and I saw that coincidences and luck were God’s blessings for me, and I’d never noticed, or said thanks. I am amazed God was so kind and persistent while I was disloyal. My ears and feet tingle pleasantly from the washing I have just given them; a washing which cleanses me and allows me to approach God in prayer.

God. An awesome deity. I feel awe, wonder and peace. Please show me the path. But surely you can see that the world is too complex, too beautiful, too harmonious to be an accident? To be the blind result of evolutionary forces? Don’t you know that science is returning to a belief in God? Don’t you know that science never contradicted Islam anyway? I am exasperated with my imaginary jury. Haven’t they researched these things?

Maybe this was the most decisive path. I’d heard on the radio an interview with a physicist who was explaining how modern science had abandoned its nineteenth century matierialistic assumptions long ago, and was scientifically of the opinion that too many phenomena occured which made no sense without there being intelligence and design behind it all. Indeed, scientific experiments were not just a passive observation of physical phenomena, observation altered the way physical events proceeded, and it seemed therefore that intelligence was the most fundamental stuff of the universe.

I read more, and more. I discovered that only the most diehard anthropologists still believed in evolution theory, though no one was saying this very loudly for fear of losing their job. My jigsaw was starting to fall apart.

OK, so you decided God existed. You were a monotheist. But Christianity is monotheistic. It is your heritage. Why leave it? Still these questioners are puzzled. But you must understand this is the easiest question of them all to answer. I smile.

I learned how the Quran did not contradict science in the same way the Bible did. I wanted to read the Biblical stories literally, and discovered I could not. Scientific fact contradicted Biblical account. But scientific fact did not contradict Quranic account, science even sometimes explained a hitherto inexplicable Quranic verse. This was stunning.

There was a verse about how the water from fresh water rivers which flowed into the sea did not mix with the sea water; verses describing conception accurately; verses referring to the orbits of the planets. Seventh century science knew none of this. How could Muhammed be so uniquely wise? My mind drew me towards the Quran, but I resisted.

I started going to church again, only to find myself in tears in nearly every service. Christianity continued to be difficult for me. So much didn’t make sense: the Trinity; the idea that Jesus was God incarnate; the worship of Mary, the Saints, or Jesus, rather than God. The priests told me to leave reason behind when contemplating God. The Trinity did not make sense, and nor was it supposed to. I delved deeper. After all, how could I leave my culture, my heritage, my family? No one would understand, and I’d be alone. I tried to be a good Christian.

I learned more. I discovered that Easter was instituted a couple of hundreds of years after Jesus’s death, that Jesus never called himself God incarnate, and more often said he was the Son of Man; that the doctrine of the Trinity was established some 300 odd years after Christ had died; that the Nicene Creed which I had faithfully recited every week, focusing on each word, was written by MEN at a political meeting to confirm a minority position that Jesus was the Son of God, and the majority viewpoint that Jesus was God’s messenger, was expunged forever.

I was so angry! Why hadn’t the Church taught me these things. Well. I knew why. People would understand that they could worship God elsewhere, and that there, worship would actually make sense to them. I would only worship one God, not three, not The Father, Son and Holy ghost; not Jesus as Lord, nor the Saints, nor Mary. Could Muhammed really be a Messenger, could the Quran be God’s word? I kept reading the Quran.

It told me that Eve was not alone to blame for the ‘fall;’ that Jesus was a Messenger; that unbelievers would laugh at me for being a believer; that people would question the authenticity of Muhammed’s claim to revelation, but that if they tried to write something as wise, consistent and rational they would fail. This seemed true. Islam asked me to use my intelligence to contemplate God, it encouraged me to seek knowledge, it told me that whoever believed in (Jews/Christians/Muslims/whoever) would get rewards, it seemed a very encompassing religion. We stand again and still standing, bend down again to a resting position with our hands on our knees. What else can I say to God? I can’t think of enough to say, the prayer seems so long.

I puff slightly, still sniffling, since with all the standing and kneeling and standing I am somewhat out of breath. So you seriously think that I would willing enter a religion which turned me into a second class citizen? I demand of my questioners. You know that there is a lot of abuse of women in Islamic countries, just as in the West, but this is not true Islam. And don’t bring the veil thing up. Don’t you know that women wear hijab because God asks them to? Because they trust in God’s word.

Still. How will I have the courage to wear hijab? I probably won’t. People will stare at me, I’ll become obvious; I’d rather hide away in the crowd when I’m out. What will my friends say when they see me in that?? OH! God! Help.

I had stalled at the edge of change for many a long month, my dilemma growing daily. What should I do? Leave my old life and start a new one? But I couldn’t possibly go out in public in hijab. People would stare at me. I stood at the forked path which God had helped me reach. I had new knowledge which rested comfortably with my intellect. Follow the conviction, or stay in the old way? How could I stay when I had a different outlook on life? How could I change when the step seemed too big for me?

I would rehearse the conversion sentence: There is no God but God and Muhammed is his prophet. Simple words, I believe in them, so convert. I cannot, I resisted. I circled endlessly day after day. God stood on one of the paths of the fork, tapping his foot. Come on Kathy. I’ve brought you here, but you must cross alone. I stayed stationary, transfixed like a kangaroo trapped in car lights late at night. Then one night, God, I suppose, gave me a final yank. I was passing a mosque with my husband. I had a feeling in me that was so strong I could hardly bear it. If you don’t convert now, you never will, my inner voice told me. I knew it was true. OK, I’ll do it. If they let me in to the mosque, I’ll do it. But there was no one there. I said the shahaada under the trees outside the mosque. I waited. I waited for the thunderclap, the immediate feeling of relief, the lifting of my burden. But it didn’t come.

I felt exactly the same. Now we are kneeling again, the world looks so different from down here. Even famous football players prostrate like this, I remember, glancing sideways at the tassles of my hijab which fall onto the prayer mat; we are all the same and equally humbled before God. Now we are sitting up straight, my prayer leader is muttering something still, waving his right hand’s forefinger around in the air. I look down at my mat again. The green, purple and black of my prayer mat look reassuringly the same.

The blackness of the Mosque’s entrance entreats me: ‘I am here, just relax and you will find me.’ My tears have dried on my face and the skin feels tight What am I doing here? Dear God. I am here because I believe in you, because I believe in the compelling and majestic words of the Quran, and because I believe in the Prophethood of Your Messenger Muhammed. I know in my heart my decision is the right one. Please give me the courage to carry on with this new self and new life, that I may serve you well with a strong faith. I smile and stand up, folding my prayer mat into half, and lay it on the sofa ready for my next encounter with its velvety green certainty. Now the burden begins to lift.

The Quran and Modern Science : Compatible or Incompatible?

The Quran and Modern Science : Compatible or Incompatible?

Al-Quran, the main source of the Islamic faith, is a book believed by its followers, the Muslims, to be completely of Divine origin. Muslims also believe that it contains guidance for all humankind. Since the message of the Quran is believed to be for all times, it should be relevant to every age.

If we analyse, the veracity of the Muslim belief does holds true and particularly in the light of established scientific discoveries. Below are some of the points that I want to share:

  • Origin of the universe from Dust and Hot Gas, or Smoke. stated in Quran.

“Moreover, He Comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: ‘Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly.’ They said: ‘We do come (together), in willing obedience.’” [Al-Quran 41:11]

  • Life and our physical bodies originated from CLAY – The Noble Quran Claimed it and Science confirmed it!
  • The existence of microscopic life in the Noble Quran.
  • The decomposed dead feeds life; food cycle – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science.
  • Science and Existence of Plant’s pairs – The Noble Quran claimed it 1500 years ago!

“And fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two.” [Al-Quran 13:3]

“Glory to Allah, Who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge.” [Al-Quran 36:36]

  • Clouds are kept in the air by the winds, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
  • The Ozone layer is a protective ceiling to earth, PRECISELY mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
  • The Ozone layer is able to heal itself from damage – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
  • The Ozone layer is raised to balance air pressure and temperature – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
  • An atom can be split further, confirmed by science.
  • The Motion of Earth in the Noble Quran… confirmed by science. The Noble Quran says that the earth is rotating around its axis.
  • The Earth is round – The Noble Quran claimed it 1500 years ago!
  • Lack of Oxygen and painful low pressure in space. Science confirmed the Noble Quran’s Divine Claim.
  • The sun’s rising and setting POINTS on earth, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science.
  • The dead turning into Fossils and Iron. The Noble Quran Claimed it, and Science today Confirmed it!
  • Mountains prevent the earth from shaking – The Noble Quran claimed it and Science confirmed it!
  • Oceanology in the Noble Quran – See the Scientific confirmation.
  • Geology in the Noble Quran – See the Scientific confirmation.
  • The darkness of oceans and disappearance of light was mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science.
  • Earthquakes occur before volcanoes, and the rising of earth’s core’s heavy metals during earthquakes, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
  • The cracking of the moon mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
  • The moon’s S-shaped orbit around earth is shaped like a branch of a date tree, mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
  • The Quran states that the light of the moon is reflected light, confirmed by science.

“And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (Glorious) Lamp?” [Al-Quran 71:15-16]

  • Seven Atmospheric Layers in the Noble Quran confirmed by Science!
  • The Noble Quran and Astronomers both claim that the Universe is 18 billion years old.
  • The Big Bang Theory and the Cosmic Crunch in the Noble Quran… Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him predicted around the time when the Cosmic Crunch occurs, the Sun would rise from the West. The Judgement Day.

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of Creation), before We clove them asunder?” [Al-Quran 21:30]

  • Man is created from only a single drop from the entire SEMEN – precisely mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science!
  • The formation of milk from blood and FARTH (digested food’s material), mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by Science!
  • The blood circulation and the production of milk in the Breast: In the Noble Quran and Science.
  • Breastfeeding for 2 years in the Noble Quran. Science had confirmed Islam’s Divine Claims.
  • The Noble Quran on the Cerebrum: Lying is generated from the person’s forehead.
  • Finger prints are unique – mentioned in the Noble Quran and confirmed by science.

“Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones? Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.” [Al-Quran 75:3-4]

  • Honey was proven to be a healing medicine for humans as was mentioned in the Noble Quran.
  • The fly insect and its cure: Mentioned in Islam and confirmed by Science (Bacteriophages).
  • The Miracle of the Rain, Thunder and Electrical “fertilization” caused by winds mentioned in the Noble Quran!
  • Water cycle, confirmed by science.

“Seest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and leads it through springs in the earth? then He causes to grow, therewith, produce of various colours.” [Al-Quran 39:21]

“He sends down rain from the sky and with it gives life to the earth after it is dead: Verily in that are Signs for those who are wise.” [Al-Quran 30:24]

“And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease).” [Al-Quran 23:18]

To attribute the presence of scientific facts in the Quran to coincidence would be against common sense and a true scientific approach. Indeed the scientific accuracy of the Quranic verses confirm the Quran’s open declaration.

“Soon will We show them Our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth it is not enough that Thy Lord doth witness all things?” [Al-Quran 41:53]

The Quran invites all humans to reflect on the Creation of this universe in the verse:

“Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of Night and Day – there are indeed Signs for men of understanding.” [Al-Quran 3:190]

The scientific evidences of the Quran clearly prove its Divine origin. No human could have produced a book, fourteen hundred years ago, that would contain such profound scientific facts. The Quran, however, is not a book of Science but a book of ‘Signs’. These signs invite Man to realize the purpose of his existence on earth, and to live in harmony with Nature. The Quran is truly a message from Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. It contains the same Message of the Oneness of God, that was preached by all prophets, right from Adam, Moses, Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them).

Prof. Tejasen accepted Islam on the strength of just one scientific ‘sign’ mentioned in the Qu’ran. Some people may require ten signs while some may require hundred signs to be convinced about the Divine origin of the Quran. Some would be unwilling to accept the Truth even after being shown a thousand signs. The Quran condemns such a closed mentality in the verse:

“Deaf, dumb and blind, They will not return (To the path).” [Al-Quran 2:18]

The Quran contains a complete code of life for the individual and society. Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), the Quranic way of life is far superior to the ‘isms’ that modern man has invented out of sheer ignorance. Who can give better guidance than the Creator Himself? I pray that this humble effort is accepted by Allah, to whom I pray for mercy and guidance (Aameen).

The Quran is the Word of ALLAH

THE QURAN IS THE WORD OF ALLAH

The Quran is a source of inspiration and true knowledge. The book of Islam – no matter what subject it refers to – is being proved as Allah’s Word as each new piece of historical, scientific or archaeological information comes to light. Facts about scientific subjects and the news delivered to us about the past and future, facts that no one could have known at the time of the Quran’s revelation, are announced in its verses accurately. It is impossible for this information, examples of which we have discussed in detail in this book, to have been known with the level of knowledge and technology available in 7th century Arabia. With this in mind, let us ask:

  • Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known that our atmosphere is made up of seven layers?
  • Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known in detail the various stages of development from which an embryo grows into a baby and then enters the world from inside his mother?
  • Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known that the universe is “steadily expanding,” as the Quran puts it, when modern scientists have only in recent decades put forward the idea of the “Big Bang”?
  • Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known about the fact that each individual’s fingertips are absolutely unique, when we have only discovered this fact recently, using modern technology and modern scientific equipment?
  • Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known about the role of one of Pharaoh’s most prominent aids, Haman, when the details of hieroglyphic translation were only discovered two centuries ago?
  • Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known that the word “Pharaoh” was only used from the 14th century B.C. and not before, as the Old Testament erroneously claims?
  • Could anyone in 7th century Arabia have known about Ubar and Iram’s Pillars, which were only discovered in recent decades via the use of NASA satellite photographs?

The only answer to these questions is as follows : the Quran is the Word of the Almighty Allah, the Originator of everything and the One Who encompasses everything with His knowledge.

In one verse, Allah says, “If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found many inconsistencies in it.” (Quran, 4:82)  [Read more...]

Every piece of information the Quran contains reveals the secret miracles of this divine book.

The human being is meant to hold fast to this Divine Book revealed by Allah and to receive it with an open heart as his one and only guide in life. In the Quran, Allah tells us the following:

“This Quran could never have been devised by any besides Allah. Rather it is confirmation of what came before it and an elucidation of the Book which contains no doubt from the Lord of all the worlds. Do they say, “He has invented it”? Say: “Then produce a sura like it and call on anyone you can besides Allah if you are telling the truth.”" (Quran, 10:37-38).  [Read more...]

“And this is a Book We have sent down and blessed, so follow it and have fear of Allah so that hopefully you will gain mercy.” (Quran, 6:155).

Rights of Women in Islam : Inheritance

Rights of Women in Islam : Inheritance

Inheritance deals closely with the distribution of wealth, i.e. dealing with the transfer of the property of the deceased to the descendants. In most of the early societies in ancient civilisation, the right to inherit the deceased properties is often given to the eldest son and male relatives. Female relatives are given lesser right to inherit, and most of the time their right is denied. In fact, in the more modern civilization, the English Common Law did not give the right for women to own their properties until 1880s. The Married Women’s Property Act was only approved by Parliament as late as 1882 in United Kingdom, to abolish the previous law which stated that a married woman cannot held any property independent from her husband. Similar situation happened in France, whereby this right was only recognised in 1930s, which is less than 100 years ago. This is how the early societies dealt with the matter of inheritance, where the treatment is favourable to men, while women were treated as the second class creations. This paper is intended to examine on how the unfair treatment on women is improved by the new set of rules introduced by Islam, and at the same time trying to answer the critics on the unfair regulations on inheritance in Islamic environment.

More than 1400 years ago, Islam have outlined specifically the regulations concerning inheritance via the Holy Quran. The regulation set in the Book is used as the basis of distribution of the deceased properties in Islam. The question is whether or not Islam dealt fairly with this matter, especially with regards to the distribution to women heirs? Firstly, whether or not Muslim women can inherit at all out of what is left behind by their family is not an issue, as the Holy Quran clearly stated:

“From what is left by parents and those nearest related there is a share for men and a share for women, whether the property be small or large, a determinate share.” (Surah An-Nisa’: 7)

And that is the clear revolution brought by Islam, as compared to the situation prior to the Islamic era. Before the Quranic injunction on inheritance, the Arabs tradition, in line with the early civilizations in the world, gave the entitlement on inheritance of the deceased properties exclusively to the male relatives. While the jahiliyah tradition in Arab during that time considered a woman as an object that can be inherited and can be easily abused, Islam improved the status of a woman with regards to inheritance by giving her the right to inherit properties from her family. In light of this situation, we would see clearly how Islam via the divine revelation revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) managed to overcome the problem of unfair treatment of the early societies, long before any modern society can create an unbiased law on inheritance which will benefit both men and women alike.

A comparison can also be established between this rule on inheritance as set in the Holy Quran with that of the other sister religions. Let us see the Biblical injunction on this matter, via the revelation to Moses in the Old Testament.

“Moses brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying : The daughters of Zelophehad are right in what they are saying, you shall indeed let them possess inheritance among their father’s brothers and pass the inheritance of their father on to them, You shall also say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall pass his inheritance on to his daughter. If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. It shall be for the Israelites a statute and ordinance, as the Lord commanded Moses.” (Numbers 27: 5-11)

Looking at the injunction in the above verses, a daughter can only inherit his father’s property in the absence of a son. In the case, when there is even one son left, the rights of the daughter will be denied altogether. This treatment is somewhat quite biased. In addition, the most important question is, where are the rights of the widow? Numbers 27 continues to outline the list of heirs entitled for the properties left, without a single woman mentioned as the legal heir, not even the widow. One would ask, what is the future of the widow when she is left with no means of support?

Now we shall compare this to the injunction via the revelation in the Holy Quran?

“Allah (thus) direct you as regards your children’s (inheritance) : to the male, a portion equal to that of two females. If only daughters, two or more, their share is two-thirds of the inheritance. If only one, her share is a half. For parents, a sixth share of the inheritance to each, if the deceased left children. If no children, and the parents are the (only) heirs, the mother has a third. If the deceased has brothers (or sisters) the mother has a sixth. After payment of legacy and debts. Ye know not whether the parents or your children are nearest to you in benefit. These are settled portions ordained by Allah, and Allah is All Knowing, All Wise.” (Surah An-Nisa’: 11)

The above verse clearly protects the right of both male and female heirs, whereby it guarantees the right of the sons, daughters, parents as well as brothers and sisters, in a manner not available in Numbers 27. The Holy Quran continues by outlining the following:

“In what your wives leave, your share is a half, if they leave no child. But if they leave a child, ye get a fourth, after payment of legacies and debt. In what ye leave, their share is a fourth, if ye leave no child. But if ye leave a child, they get an eight, after payment of legacies and debts. If the man or woman whose inheritance is in question, has left neither ascendants nor descendants, but has left a brother or a sister, each one of the two gets a sixth. But if more than two, they share in a third, after payment of legacies and debts, so that no loss is caused. Thus is it ordained by Allah, and Allah is All-knowing, Most Forbearing.” (Surah An-Nisa’: 12)

In contrast to the Biblical injunction via Numbers 27, Quran specifically includes the right of the widow together in this verse. This verse, together with verse 176 of the same sura also outlines the distribution in the situation where there is no ascendants or descendants of the deceased, in which it still gives a fair right to both male and female. Needless to say, the rules on inheritance stated via the Quran is complete, and the most important factor, is that it protects the right of both male and female heirs, the quality in which is not available prior to the Islamic era.

The attacks upon the Islamic inheritance law however concentrates on the issue of the “inequality” between the share inherited by a man and the share inherited by a woman, as stated via verse 11 and 12 of Surah An-Nisa’. Looking at these verses in isolation, it is easy for the ignorant critics to conclude that while the Quran still protects the right of the women heirs, it is being done “unfairly” by giving lesser right than that enjoyed by men heirs (although this so-called “unfair” treatment only applies to the children, while parents and siblings are treated equally in both verses regardless of gender).

However, we shall examine this rule together with other rules set by Islam in relation to properties to see the balance and the value behind the regulations outlined in Surah An-Nisa’ verse 11-12. First, we have to see the overall responsibilities of a man with regard to woman in Islamic context:

“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has give the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means.” (Surah An-Nisa’:34)

The Holy Quran made it clear in the above verse that the provision for maintenance of a woman is the responsibility of a man.

Under the Shariah law:

a) For a single woman, the maintenance should be provided by her father. In the absence of her father, her male relatives, including brothers, grandfather and uncles, are responsible for the provision of her maintenance.

b) The provision for maintenance of a married woman is exclusively the responsibility of her husband (Surah An-Nisa’: 5), and a husband is required to pay the dowry for his wife upon marriage (Surah An-Nisa’: 4). This dowry is exclusively owned by the wife, and the husband has no right to take it back even upon divorce (Surah An-Nisa’: 20-21)

c) A woman has no financial obligation at all, and whatever she earns or inherits is exclusively her own property. She is free to spend her treasure the way she wants it, and a husband has no right to take even a single cent, except what is willingly given by her.

d) Upon divorce, a husband is required to pay for her mut’ah (Surah Al-Baqarah: 241) and maintenance during ‘iddah (Surah Al-Talaq: 6). The responsibility for the maintenance of the children upon divorce is on the shoulder of the husband (Surah Al-Baqarah: 233)

By examining the points as stated above, one could see how heavy is the financial responsibility assigned to a man, with regards to the maintenance of a woman, and thus inheritance rules are meant to offset this imbalance so that the society lives free of all gender or class wars. While woman has very little, and more often than not, no financial obligation at all. If the right of a woman to inherit is denied, it would be unfair for her as she’s related to the deceased. The right is still given to the women, as a protection to the women in case of any dispute, which may result in the insecurity or oppression to the women themselves.

However, if the share of the properties assigned equally between a man and a woman, it will be unjust for the man as he has greater financial responsibility than the woman. This is the value behind this injunction, in which most critics failed to consider. Islam outlines this matter beautifully, by creating a balance between the rights enjoyed by both men and women. It is clear that, no one is therefore worse off as a result of this rule. After a simple comparison between the financial rights and duties of Muslim women, one British Muslim woman has concluded that Islam has treated women not only fairly but generously.

The issue of women in Islam, is topic of great misunderstanding and distortion due partly to a lack of understanding, but also partly due to misbehavior of some Muslims which has been taken to represent the teachings of Islam.

The accusations of inequality and unfairness of the Islamic law on inheritance therefore stands with no basis for the claims. While the modern society struggles to define the best way to protect the rights of both men and women alike, Islam is a step ahead by outlining the most refined and specific rules on inheritance that is known to the civilised world, about 1400 years in advance. What is more amazing is that while Islam emerge at the time when the status of a woman was at an all-time low and her rights were totally deprived, Islam has never failed to gradually improve the status of the women to the highest standard by giving a fair treatment to them, which is beyond imagination if the situation 1400 years ago is taken into consideration.

And only Allah knows best!
